Cattle & Cane The evolution of a band
As with all of us we hear music pretty much on a daily basis of some sort, it could be in passing, it could be a playlist, and sometimes something just stands out when it plays, and that is the case for me with Cattle & Cain. I have shot them once Thekla in Bristol a few years ago when they were supporting another artist, and their music stood out so much that i played it alot after the show, and as always you tend to over play something, so i played other music, and more recently i have listened to whats called your daily list of music on Spotify, or the pre made list based on what you listen too, and this song kept standing out every time it played, but as it was playing as i was doing something i never checked who it was or anything, and then by chance i was looking at what was on this list and there was the song Mexico, I was properly surprised when i found out that it was Cattle & Cain that had sung it, now what i mean is that the earlier music for me personally is very different to this new album, which brings me on the this blog,(segway lol).
I feel like this new album Navigator is there best music to date, there is change in the music, there is a much more distinctive feel to the whole album.
But before we get to the album review lets go back a little,
2015 : The release of Come Home, I have listened to this song a massive amount, but until a few days ago never watched the video for it, but its amazing how watching the video can change your view of a song. I liked it, and before anybody says anything this is coming from somebody who is not a songwriter or musician, i am just somebody who enjoys music, The start of the song initially was hard to listen to because of the way it was constructed, to many rhyming words, but if you actually listen to it again a few times you get to see how it leads into the core of the song. Once you get past that its a great song, but then you add the video to it, and it takes it to a new level, I will be the first to say that despite listening to it many times didn't really understand the song, but the second you add that video, it transforms it in a massive way.
The video is set out in such a way that if your more watching than listening to it, you don't see the ending until the end, i was like oh damm, didn't see that coming. And i am not going to explain the ending so you can see it for yourselves.
2017 : Release of Cattle & Cain EP
There is a different feel to this album compared to their new album.
Their self named album feels more like it has a mix of styles, from Home is in your arms being a much more country style based song, and then you have Have you been in the wars again feeling more like the folk that they are known for, but despite this the songwriting i think is really good, it has a much more organic feel to it, which for me gives it a much more likeability factor to it.
They have released to date 3 albums
2015 Home, 2017 Mirrors, 2019 Navigator
Navigator is as i said the most recent album, and by far the best music they have produced (for me personally). The music is still in the Cattle & Cane style but with a much more today feel to it if that makes sense and it makes it more of an option to a much wider audience.
For me the two stand out songs on the album are Neighbourhood and Mexico, there is a real stand out out vibe to both songs that would most definitely not be out of place in the top end of the charts,
This album well and truly takes them away from the Folk style that they are more associated with, and i think well and truly puts them on the map.
To be honest they are probably more well know than you realise, but without actually knowing their name, they have had music played on Sunday Brunch, Made in Chelsea, The only way is Essex, and MTV's Catfish show, and they have Shared the stage with artists such as Tom Odell, Stereophonics , Lewis Capaldi and Jake Isaak, and think its only a matter of time before they become part of the mainstay of music,
