Ollie Dixon Here and Now
I have known about Ollie for a couple of years and met him on my radio show a little while ago, and was really impressed with how humble he was, he worked with others here in Devon and Cornwall in regards to mental health awareness in the music Industry.
He then seemed to want to make a change to his music, his style, and then recently there has been a-lot of activity on social media about some new music, and the change he was looking for has most defiantly worked his new work is much darker but not too dark, and its taken his music in a whole new direction.
Here & Now is Ollie's new EP, and i have to say i am really exited to see where he goes from here, as this is a great introduction to his new style of music, there is a harder vive, but with a darker tone to it.
Bearing in mind i am no singer, songwriter, or musician, but i would imagine its hard stepping away and coming back with something new, i don't know what made this change happen but it has been a step in the right direction, and i don't mean that his previous work wasn't good but sometimes when artists try to go in a total new direction sometimes it doesn't work, but the work Ollie has put into this new work as most definitely paid off.
Its
Anchors Pt1 as a whole gets right to the point about his new style and work, there is no messing around, its a case of this is me and this is my music. parts of this song actually remind me of the some of the early work from passenger, not in that its same but in the vibe of the song.
Through all the songs on this ep there is a much grittier vibe to his singing, the songwriting and his playing, and i am sure there is a new style to his play, i think its called slide play, where the guitar is placed on the lap, and im sure he was toying with the idea a while back.
My only complaint having played the ep many times is that it could with have done with another song. At the moment it's just over 16 minutes long, so another song would have extended that to just over 20 mins, which would have still kept him within whats normally called and ep.
But that would be my only negative with this ep, and i will be honest in part the reason i say there should be 5 is that so i can hear more of his music, when you get into a ep or album you get engrossed so when it finishes earlier than you expect it actually comes a a disappointment.
All in all he has managed to pull off a really really good ep, he has also managed that transition into this new style and it suit him really well.
Outside of the ep the one thing i have noticed is that any previous work has been pulled, at least from Spotify, now i don't know the reason for this, and there could be many reasons, but if its been pulled to make way for his new work i think taking his previous work off is bit of a downer, now again i am just talking in the context of if he personally has pulled his work, having published work itself is a massive achievement, and should be looked upon in that way, it showcases that if you feel the need to change that you can do that, and that is what Ollie did, but by taking away previous work others don't get to really see the hard work you have put in.
Overall though if i were to mark this EP it would get a 4 out of 5.
